Thai uses classifiers (also called measure words or counters) when counting or specifying nouns. Using the correct classifier is essential for natural-sounding Thai.
Common Thai Classifiers
คน (kon) – People. Example: นักเรียน 3 คน (3 students).
ตัว (dtua) – Animals, chairs, tables, shirts, digits. Example: หมา 2 ตัว (2 dogs).
อัน (an) – Small objects, miscellaneous items. Example: ช้อน 1 อัน (1 spoon).
ใบ (bai) – Flat objects, leaves, cups, bags, eggs. Example: ไข่ 5 ใบ (5 eggs).
เล่ม (lêm) – Books, knives, candles. Example: หนังสือ 2 เล่ม (2 books).
คัน (kan) – Vehicles, umbrellas. Example: รถ 1 คัน (1 car).
